How Tax Codes Work
The numbers in your tax code tell your employer or pension provider how much tax-free income you get in that tax year.
HMRC calculates your individual number based on your tax-free Personal Allowance and any untaxed income or company benefits you receive.
For example, if your tax code is 1100L, it means you have a tax-free Personal Allowance of £11,000 for the year.
Emergency tax codes like 1257L W1, 1257L M1, or 1257L X are used when your employer doesn't have enough information to give you a correct tax code.
